We have changed the formula and the milling process to produce a soap that goes well beyond our original idea. That idea was to produce a soap that formed an ionic attachment to the heavy metal particles (lead, cadmium, etc.) that painters inevitably get onto and into their hands. Our previous formula relied on deionized water and the chelating agent, EDTA. It worked well. However, the deionized water lost efficacy over time while the EDTA kept on keeping on. The new formula contains four times as much EDTA and no deionized water. The results have been impressive.

First, a word about EDTA, an abbreviation of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. As soon as most people hear a chemical name they assume that it kills plants, goldfish and small children and hearing that they might be ingesting DHMO (dihydrogen monoxide) in their food, will panic. It's only upon learning the dihydrogen monoxide is another name for water that they begin to calm down. The same with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. If you look at the ingredients on your mayonnaise jar you'll see EDTA prominently listed. Not only is it edible, it also prevents spoilage.

EDTA is also used to cleanse the blood of people who have been exposed to a great deal of lead. It's good stuff and it works (still, one soap maker proudly announces that they don’t have any EDTA in their soap…Ivory can say the same thing and it won’t remove lead and cadmium).

EDTA also has some unexpected benefits to the quality of the soap. We have a new milling process for the soft linseed soap we make (a very different process than that used to make the hard Ugly Dog Brush Soap). The new milling process and the additional EDTA have combined to make a softer soap that produces more suds, rinses easier and does a better job of attracting and removing heavy metal particles.
