We are quite proud of our selection of the finest hand-made oil paints for the serious artist. We are even prouder of the fact that, based on our track record with making mediums, our customers had so much faith in our abilities that they bought (averaging $1000 and $500) to help us build the paint making facilities. We know of no other business started by customer subscription.
Cennini paints are as close to the paints used in past centuries as can be produced. They have extraordinary pigment load and very few amendments and no cheap fillers. Unlike commercially made oil paints, this means that they do not have unlimited shelf life.
Most manufacturers produce paints that can sit around a store for decades and still have the same mediocre qualities. The same can be said for Twinkies. They have enough preservatives in them to last until mid-millennium. Think of Cennini as the fine baker who produces superb pastries that will grow stale if not consumed within a reasonable period. Fresh paint is the best and most active paint.
For Cennini paints, a reasonable period is generally within a year or so in the tube and somewhat less in a tin. A great deal has to do with how carefully you treat the paint in the tube. Leave the cap off for a while and the paint hardens. That's what it is supposed to do.
This is probably the best paint in the world and it has to be treated differently than Twinkie paint. Buy what you need and use it properly and you'll have no problems (we use tubes that are five year's old, but we're very careful with cleaning the neck and cap before closing).
After many months of reviewing and testing of formulations, Max has made improvements to virtually every formula. He located a high acid number Safflower oil, very unlike the common salad oil. The strength and drying qualities are somewhat similar to Special Aged linseed. The drying is about 15% slower but the big advantage is that it is crystal clear. We are now using this Safflower oil in all of our whites and pale colors and the difference is quite noticeable.
Unlike the standard 37ml tube, our standard tube is a whopping 50ml. That extra quantity makes our paint competitively priced.
