Soon after the development of oil painting, artists found that, a greenish underpainting, glazed with flesh tones produced a far more lively and realistic rendering of skin tones than did any other method. This method was known as Verdaccio.
Traditionally, artists had to mix this range of soft green-greys every day before commencing their underpaintings. To our knowledge, this is the first time a complete set of verdaccios has been formulated and offered for sale.
Starting with a monochromatic underpainting takes away much of the confusion of realistic painting. A properly formulated paint for underpainting should be very smooth and buttery feeling, leaving the minimum of raised strokes to enable accurate glazing in the overpainting stages. In order to make the paint lay down smoothly, we ground the pigment in a combination of our Special Aged Oil and Stand Oil. It dries to a smooth finish, perfect for accepting subsequent layers of paint.
A mix of Ivory Black, Raw Umber and Pthalo Green (Yellow Shade) form the base tone with increasing percentages of a zinc/titanium white mix forming the precisely placed tints.

The kit consists of eight degrees of verdaccio, ranging from a near black to a pale, almost white, green tint. By adding black and white at either end, you have a complete Munsell scale. These are generously sized tubes. They are also sold individually as replacements.
