Paint - Grisaille Kit - 8 Large Tubes #16209
Paint - Grisaille Kit - 8 Large Tubes  Grisaille (greez-eye) is the traditional French term for gray paints. We’ve updated grisailles by having them correspond exactly to the Munsell Neutral Gray Scale.
Because they are usually used for underpainting, these grisaille paints have been formulated to be smoother, leave less texture, are soft, buttery and capable of producing very fine detail with no dilution. That means your subsequent layers won’t have to fight stucco-like textures.

A year ago we took our grisailles off the market as we awaited the upgrading of our new display test spectrometer (which is basically a light meter on steroids). The reason for the upgrade was to insure that the paints corresponded exactly to the Munsell Neutral Gray Scale.

The vaunted ICSS numbers are so variable as to be laughable. Their Middle Gray ranges from a Munsell n. 4.75/ all the way to a Munsell n. 6.25/. That’s a spread of one and a half Values on the Munsell scale…hardly accurate!

While the Munsell Neutral Gray Scale charts range in slight increments over one half a Value, as you can see in the photo, there's only one Munsell n. 5.0/ and it is that exact Value that we formulate. Even though we have practiced eyes, there comes a time when the technology takes precedence. Thus, all of the grisailles are technically spot on.

No more eyeballing.

In the case of the Value 5, it's reflectance value must be 19.8%...and it is. We defy anyone to match that closely by eye.

As grisailles are used for underpainting, these paints have been formulated to be smoother and leave less texture. Textured underpaint can be a problem in subsequent glazing. So these are soft, buttery and capable of producing very fine detail with no dilution. They are formulated with a perfectly neutral "reference" bone black, so there's no shifting to the cool or warm.

These are the best grisailles we've ever made. In truth, they are the best anyone has ever made. They are also the first paints to sport our new labels. These labels are held fast with a very aggressive adhesive and will not fall off in normal studio handling. The new design is nice, too.

If, like most painters, you find that you run out of one Value quicker than others, you can buy individual tubes for $13.50 apiece. Sorry, no discount on individual grisailles.
