LIMITED SUPPLY

The magnificent blues used by Fra Angelico in his San Marco Altarpiece have long been sought by artists. Fra Angelico worked in tempera which imparted a special depth and richness to the blue pigment. Trying to match it by mixing different pigments always resulted in inferior color qualities. Also, attaining that color in oils was almost impossible until a lucky accident at a pigment factory. They produced some of the best Cobalt blues in the world and always produced them to match a particular standard of either a Deep or Light Cobalt Blue.
On one batch, during the calcining process, the pigment was removed and cooled to a shade that did not conform to the two the sold. This was an off-batch, every bit as permanent as any Cobalt Blue but to a shade that did not conform to industry standards for making everything from printer’s inks to toothbrushes. We were fortunate in being able to by a small quantity of this pigment and it produces a blue that is identical to the one use by Fra Angelico. Probably the purest blue there is.
There was never much of this pigment released and once this small supply is gone there will be no more.
Ground in Special Aged Linseed Oil and packed in the big 50ml tube
