Hard-To-Get! Canada Balsam has always been difficult to obtain. Optically pure, this balsam has been used in preparing microscope slides. When mixed with Stand Oil, Canada Balsam adds gloss and leveling to mediums. A moderate dryer, Canada Balsam and oil takes a day or two to dry. In that time, it causes the paints to smooth out and level, creating an otherwise difficult-to-obtain softening and diffusion of edges. Much more controllable than Venice Turpentine (and much faster drying) Canada Balsam is one of our studio standbys.
