These are the resinous exudations from trees. This is the pleasant-smelling sap you have seen dripping from cuts in evergreen trees and bushes. Centuries ago, artists began to use these saps in making painting mediums. They can cause paint strokes to level and dry to an enamel-like sheen. Some dry faster than others but the one thing they all have in common is they prevent the paint from creeping and streakiness. Adding balsams to the paint medium guarantees the paint will grip to the previous layers.
